I have to get this part out of the way: As a 2004, it was still really really REALLY young. And hadn't come into balance at all. Harsh, tannic, green, a little astringent, with a huge blast of oak.
That being said, I'll say that from what I could discern in getting past the youth, it was a very nice wine. As it opened up, more fruit came forward, and underneath there was some chocolate, black olive, and a nice smokiness. It also had a touch of sulfurousness to it. I'd be interested in seeing how it tastes and smells in 10 or 15 years; hopefully it'll have calmed down a little by then.
